Pain doesn't exist. Colors don't exist. Only grey does. Jonas, a twelve year old when he was assigned to become a receiver of memory. Being the receiver means seeing things beyond what others can see and worst of all, you can feel the pain. I have always wanted to read this book as the film came out and a lot of people here have been reading it in school. One of the most interesting things about this book is that although it was written in 1993, it has the things which you would find in a modern books today. I felt the Divergent series has a lot of similarities with The Giver. For example, in Divergent you would have to choose a faction to be a part of and in the Giver your job is chosen for you.I really enjoyed this book, it made me think about the world around me, how grey it is and how much we need of more colors. The characters are also relatable ,and this because of their teenagers to. Finally, the vocabulary in this book is amazing, I learnt a lot.
I really enjoyed this book because, even though it is supposed to be a kid's book than a teenage, the story is interring enough to get anyone's the attention. I really enjoyed Jonas as a character because his character changes from a scared litter boy, to someone willing to risk his future to save his community, it's really fun to follow up. This book shows how people grow up, at first we are scared when we get jobs or a new responsibilities, but as we get used to it we want to move more and more away from childhood or being kids.
Throughout this book, Jonas losses trust in his parents and his friends, this is something that happens in everyone's life . At the beginning, when Jonas was a kid in the community, he trusts his parents and firends completely. However, after The Giver shows Jonas the tape of his Father "releasing" a new born child, a process where jonas parents killed the baby. Jonas loses his trust of his father. This moment is what that forced Jonas to leave the community, even before The Giver has planned for him to. this book is interesting to read. There are two possible meanings behind the ending, Jonas and Gabriel freeze to death together on the sled, or they have really found "Elsewhere".the ending still shows us that, Jonas has made choices for himself , than being told what to do. Whatever happens to him, it is still better than his life in the community.
The community has limits the choices of the people removing joy from life. By leaving the community Jonas has already made a choice, and this shows us the reader that it is better to live your life the way you would like to, than be held back by others and never really be happy. I think this is an important message for kids and also adulets, bullying in schools limit people from being themselves.
This book was easily read in a couple weeks because of its simple and its has interesting characters. The ending of The Giver is powerful because we have a choice in what it means, just as Jonas made a sacrificial choice for the good of the community, you have to decide for yourself too.
